Our ability to achieve an extremely quick turnaround led to our being involved in this event for the ninth year running. We were approached by MTV Networks Italy to provide a series of band extras for the 2009 MTV awards in Berlin, manufacturing last minute props for host Katy Perry and fellow performer Shakira, just four days before the show. In manufacturing this series of key items, it was important to achieve the desired aesthetic whilst ensuring that each was fit for purpose. Having so many skills in-house enabled us to offer a highly bespoke level of service, regardless of the time constraints.

The items for Katy Perry included a champagne glass, a black swing, a moon swing and a sign. The sign was a flown piece, highly glittered and made from a clear 1.5m diameter polycarbonate disc with holes provided for lighting bulbs. Raised MDF lettering was accurately produced using one of our CNC machines, facilities that contribute greatly to our ability to work within very short timescales. Quilted black leather-look upholstery was used for both swings, with added black ribbons and bows mirror mosaic and trailing glitter stars on the first swing. The second, 2m crescent moon swing required a steel internal structure before being clad, sprayed with silver glitter and finished with large tassels. Both swings were provided complete with fixing points and lap straps.

A 1.2m diameter burlesque style champagne glass was made from vacu-formed polycarbonate, with a steel frame and GRP clad glittered stem. Mounted on a trucking base for speed of deployment, this prop was topped off with a giant 300mm green olive on a 1250mm cocktail stick.

Finally, we constructed a multi-level chevron shaped dance platform for Shakira, which was finished to complement the surrounding set. In keeping with the sauna theme, our interpretation team gave the 6m wide platform a tile effect finish in a white satin glaze with contrasting gold detail.
