Leeds Art Gallery: ‘three of four’
Client
Yorkshire Sculpture International
Location
Central Court, Leeds Art Gallery
Designed by visual artist Ayşe Erkmen, ‘three of four’ undertakes some ‘architectural anthropology’, directly referencing the rediscovered vaulted glass roof of Leeds City Art Gallery’s Central Court. This striking architectural feature was uncovered during recent renovations and has been mirrored in the self-supporting artwork that sweeps through the entire gallery space.
Using the artist’s sketch, we produced 3D models of the aluminium framework. Precision was a primary consideration: to facilitate installation, the sculpture was manufactured as a kit of parts, coming together neatly on site to form four truss arches and three bays, all joined by a series of ladder frames. A mixture of rolling and laser tube cutting provided accurately made components. Great care was taken during installation, with access via an ornate staircase surrounded by art works and some pieces being brought in over the Gallery’s roof.
‘three of four’ is a major commission for the 110-day Yorkshire Sculpture International festival.
