Leeds Cathedral Donations Box

Client
Leeds Cathedral
Location
Leeds, UK

Designed by architect Richard Williams, this donations box was manufactured with durability and beauty in mind. Several of our different workshop departments lent their expertise to realise the design and create something in-keeping with the cathedral’s Arts & Crafts neo-Gothic architecture.

Although by size a fairly small commission for us, the box received no less attention to detail than our larger projects and in fact drew on the latest digital manufacturing techniques along with traditional hand-finishing.

The box comprises a heavy, welded steel base finished in a high quality black gloss paint. The clear acrylic casing is polished and surrounded by four angels, each standing on a pillar. The angels and pillars were 3D printed using our Hewlett Packard Multi Jet Fusion 4200. This machine prints with a layer thickness of 0.07 to 0.12 mm and delivers fabulous detail. Liquid gilding was applied by hand to the angels, while the pillars were finished with a black gloss to match the steel base. A laser cut cruciform detail was added to the lid of the acrylic casing, providing a slot for donations.
